Lake Bled and Lake Bohinj, Slovenia

These two beautiful lakes – right on the edge of Triglav National Park in western Slovenia – are very different. Lake Bled has long been a traditional tourist destination, surrounded by hotels and tourist facilities. Lake Bohinj is much less developed and much larger.

A walk around Lake Bled is a treat. The Church of the Assumption on the island in the middle of the lake makes for a fairy tale setting that almost doesn’t look real. There’s a castle high above as well and another dramatic church next to it.

Walking around Lake Bohinj takes far longer. There are certainly marks of civilization but, compared to Bled, it’s easy to feel isolated from the world in Bohinj.
